Biography of Mohamed A. El-Erian

Mohamed A. El-Erian is an American financier and economist who is currently a leading economic consultant for the multinational financial corporation 'Allianz'. He previously held positions as CEO and Chief Investment Officer at 'PIMCO', a subsidiary of 'Allianz', known as one of the world's largest bond investors with approximately $2 trillion in assets under management. El-Erian's remarkable career and reputation as a financial thinker began with his early life and education.

Early Life and Education

Mohamed El-Erian was born in New York and spent his childhood in Egypt. His family returned to New York in 1968 when his father secured a job at the United Nations. El-Erian frequently traveled with his father on diplomatic missions during this time. He received a special scholarship to attend one of the colleges at the University of Cambridge in the UK, where he excelled in economics. He continued his education at the University of Oxford, obtaining master's and doctoral degrees in economics. In June 2011, El-Erian was honored with an honorary doctorate from the American University in Cairo. Later, in December 2013, he became an honorary fellow of his first alma mater, Queens' College, Cambridge.

Career

El-Erian worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C. for 15 years, serving as Deputy Director. In 1999, he joined 'PIMCO' and quickly became a key member of the team responsible for investment strategies and portfolio management. After leaving 'PIMCO', El-Erian joined the 'Harvard Management Company', where he served as President and CEO, overseeing the management of Harvard's funds and financial flows. He also taught at Harvard Business School during this time. El-Erian is still listed as a member of Harvard's Global Advisory Council.

In 2007, El-Erian returned to 'PIMCO' as CEO, responsible for organizing the firm's strategic management and overall global operations. He shared the position of Chief Investment Officer with Bill Gross, one of the company's founders. Together, they developed the concept of the "new normal" for post-crisis global economic growth. El-Erian continued to develop this concept and published articles on various practical aspects of applying the "new normal", establishing himself as an outstanding thinker and economic analyst.

Contributions and Achievements

As of December 21, 2012, El-Erian has been a member of the President Obama's Global Development Council. He is a columnist for 'Bloomberg View' and regularly writes for 'Financial Times', being part of their prestigious "A-List" of contributors. El-Erian also collaborates with other well-known financial publications such as 'Business Insider' and 'Fortune/CNN'. Despite his busy schedule, El-Erian continues to engage in academic activities and maintains collaborations with renowned educational institutions worldwide.
